Also Canada had a bill introduced recently which is very similar to SOPA and PIPA. Why must we influence the world in such a way? Our influence on our northern neighbors reminds me of how we discussed our strong influence on Canada and we see it worldwide.
In Europe certain governments have refused to block certain websites like the Pirate bay because they feel that the free flow of ideas is beneficial and can come through the use of piracy. I do understand that piracy does hurt the producer in many cases, but how much? How many CDs are artists losing and how much money does that equate to? It's unclear.
America seems to be stirring up these causes domestically to possibly distract them and pass other bills like NDAA which got relatively no press. It seems silly that there is so little transparency in the current administration, it gets a bit annoying.

ReplyDeleteI just think it's really shady and messed up of Obama to sign ACTA in secret when he publicly opposed SOPA.
What I want to know is why our Congress even bothered with SOPA and PIPA if ACTA was going to come along and we would be forced to follow it without our approval.
I really honestly don't think that file sharing (piracy really isn't even a good name...call it what it is) causes that much damage to artists! It may hurt the middle man, who is becoming obsolete anyway.
BLAH. I hate it.

ReplyDeleteHannah: ^--- good idea and did he really???
I understand why these bills are being created and its the right thing to do to try and protect what rightfully belongs to artists and such, but the bills go much farther than preventing someone from downloading a song illegally. It ensures that all creative and expressive websites are torn down and any means of sharing something interesting with another person becomes impossible. I just don't get why THEY don't see that it'll so more damage than good.
