Iran's Nuclear Program

Iran has been developing a nuclear program with has recently gained steam. Do we think this is much of a threat? If so in what way?
People have argued the danger of Iran with a nuclear arsenal by saying that it will be used against Israel and then the United States as Israel's ally might be a second target. The counter argument to that has been that by attacking Israel, Iran runs the risk of hurting Palestinians. I find both of these arguments fallacious and feel that there is little to worry about in terms of Iran's nuclear arsenal.
Iran must realize that the United States has the most powerful military in the world. By engaging in a war with the United States they would be making an incredible error. The United States has the power to hurt Iran, and if this war were to occur, in the peace treaty there would surely be a clause about certain natural resources that the United States might want.
Furthermore, as I previously said, the United States if anything would be a secondary target. This means that if Iran used nuclear weapons, the United States would have time to react and issue a warning to Iran.
I think it's a similar situation with North Korea. In that case we would be a primary target, but North Korea realizes that the United States possesses incredible strength which North Korea does not. Essentially, because of the power that the United States has, for now, we don't need to worry much about the potential of warfare with nations that have nuclear weapons.

  1. Well, one could only imagine..... I think that's really all that needs to be said here.

But yes, I agree with you that it's not really a threat that the US should be worried about. I doubt they're about to mess with the US, and if they did, we have the power to hit them 10x worse.

Somehow, I think there's an unspoken agreement among everyone that nuclear weapons just aren't okay anymore. We all know that if ONE country uses a nuclear weapon, then at least one country will be sending one back shortly, and eventually we all die and the earth is blown up multiple times.

While it is comforting to say and think that everyone silently agrees to this, I think we all hope that Iran and North Korea are in on the secret.

  3. The use of nuclear weapons have come to equal the death of the entire world. Using one to attack one country would cause more backlash than gain. With all of the allies and enemies and agreements to aid one another in times of war/trouble everyone would end up getting involved. so that program just seems like a very stupid idea, or maybe they just want to appear threatening for their own safety.

  4. Nuclear powers have always had more power, if only from the "do what I want or I can blow you up" standpoint. However, it is inconceivable that in this day and age any country would actually resort to using nuclear weapons. In a post-Cold War era, nuclear warfare is too threatening a prospect for any country to attempt it. However, the development of nuclear weapons establishes a country as a technological and political power.

  5. Yeah now a days I just remember that one video Freccia showed my APUSH class last year about all the countries that have nuclear bombs. It's scary and shows that if one country does enough to piss off other counties we could potentially destroy the world. Luckily no one wants that so everyone tries to lay off the nuclear bombs in order to protect Earth in general.
